Pneumatic? Looks a tattoo gun setup, does the foot pedal control speed? I guess that must offer better control than a regular engraver?

What you do for your pattern? Glue on template?

Thumbs Up Homemade hand engraving machine

The homemade hand engraving machine is made by modifying a 12 volt tire inflator. You modify it by closing off the reed valve so the air just goes back and forth with the piston. It creates a pulse that drives the piston in the hand piece. There is a very good video on Shaun Hughes hand engraving youtube channel https://youtu.be/GdT7hMV_cfo

I have tried several 12 volt compressors and the one I like best is a Pittsburgh from Harbor Freight, its very quiet and cheep. I use a cheep 12 volt speed controller, an on off tattoo foot switch and an air peddle for total control of how hard the graver hits. I have engraved 4140 steel with this machine, it has the power, but control is more important.

I added a 15 amp 110 to 12 volt power supply, so I can run on 110 or 12 volts.
I also installed an 80mm PC fan to keep everything cool.

I make the hand pieces on the lathe, I have a few hand pieces for sale, and supply a blueprint if you want to make you own or have one made. I am going to make a video on how to do this in a few days. See attached pdf for hand piece dimensions.

Thumbs Up Pattern and pattern transfers

To transfer a design to engrave I use a HP laser printer, vector graphics work the best.
I print to parchment paper, tape it to what I want to engrave and use acetone or fingernail polish remover to soften the toner and burnish the image onto the metal. Once transferred it is very durable and does not wipe off easy. It must be a laser printer, ink jet won't work. The toner in laser printers is a plastic powder, that why it works with the acetone.
