Default RPD top cover rail mount

So I had to take a brief hiatus from my barrel change project while I get some new cutters and boring bars for making the locking collar...so I decided to make my top cover rail mount. I originally wanted to mount it to the top of the cover, like some of the first gen m249 top covers ive seen, but it turns out there's no room for any kind of fasteners. I searched for other RDP railed top covers, but really couldn't find any. The ones I did find didn't really appeal to me. So oddly my inspiration came from a video game. Turns out mounting the rail from the straight side of the rail where the leaf spring type thing is mounted, provides more than enough room for rivets (my approach) or any other non-permanent fastener. So I documented my process so everyone could see it. I know I wish I could've seen something like this before I built it. Its still in the white and I haven't drilled the holes for my rivets, but the idea is there. Also, I can crank these out pretty quick (1 week start to finish) if anybody would like one, 100 shipped!

and here's the semi-finished rail mount. Again, its still in the white and I haven't drilled the holes for my rivets, but I will post up pictures of it painted and mounted. If anyone wants one they will be shipped painted and drilled. I'm using 90 degree countersunk rivets, and I'll be drilling these mounts for that type of fastener, unless anybody wants anything special.

OK so here it is finished....I had to make a few changes once I re-assembled the top cover mechanisms, but it turned out well. I just used some screws to temporarily mount it because I want to paint the top cover when I'm finished with my RDP. But it shows that you'd have enough room to fasten it on the inside. Obviously, rivets would sit much lower.

Very nice work! Now we just need some pics with an ACOG on it! Or an EOtech.
