I guess I've now moved over to the dark side. A few years ago I'd have said I'd never have a commie gun. Well, never say never.

I'm on the search for 7.62 X 39. Here's a listing from one good vendor
http://www.sgammo.com/catalog/rifle-ammunition/762x39

First, I'm used to reloading. Looks like this stuff is all steel case and not made to reload. At least its cheap. Is reloading generally not done on commie guns?

Second, any offer better than another? I got screwed with brown bear .223 once. I like the looks of those spam cans for storage. Anyone have another favorite vendor?

If you need to check to see if an ammo/gun deal is the best, use this ->

I own about a dozen AKM's in 7.62x39 they eat any commie ammo you feed them. There is Yugo ammo (brass cased) available for slightly more but it is surplus and corrosive. It has berdan primers but copper jacketed bullets. A lot of the Russian stuff is steel jacketed and will wear the bore faster but it all shoots well if the chamber is chrome lined and headspace is not too tight.

Reloading is doable. RCBS and Lee have dies at reasonable pricing. I would guess that your bore on a 1919 would be .308 or so (instead of the commie .311) RCBS includes both expanders and .308 bullets are plentiful. Norma, Winchester, and some nny brass out there in boxer primed.

Thanks for the best deal site. it confirmed that SGammo is about as good as any.
I got a couple spam cans and another 1000 for starters.

Buckoff, do you think the AKM is the best of the AK family? I see their are offers all over the price map. I just picked up an RPK to go with my RPDs. probably need an AKM to keep them company. Or is their any particular AK to look for? For now, I think I'll resist going to the AK74 line. I already have too many different ammo sizes.

This is just like 1919's........they come in as parts kits then get built (sometimes not so well). I really like the AK (vs the AKM) and if you go with KVAR you can't go wrong. If you want to save some moola get a CNC Warrior milled frame and a Bulgy kit and build your own type III. Although I have built quite a few on Nodak Spud sheet metal receivers (AKM) and if built right (meaning straight and fitted well) they shoot superbly. Purists want original chrome lined barrels but the american (non chrome) bbls seem to be more accurate (see my comment about steeel jackets and wear above). I always use a Tapco G2 trigger group or one of the adjustable RSA ones.

I can help you here immensely drop me an email with your addy and I'll send you my cell number.

Karl the good thing about the AK74 is the ammo is still relatively cheap at the moment but I understand about not wanting yet another type of ammo to have to buy. I went through this earlier this year. You won't be disappointed with SGAmmo either. Sam's a great guy to do business with.

There's A LOT of SGammo around here. Not my first trip to the store.

I had a very nice chat with Buckoff today. Learned a ton about AKs. One take home message was both the AK74 rifle kits and ammo are low price right now and likely to go up.(what doesn't go up in this hobby?) He convinced me I should jump into commie gun kit building.

I need to quit my real job so I can have enough time to persue this hobby the way it should be done.

That's good to hear Sam deserves it. He and Lala work hard, best ammo seller I've ever dealt with. I've been going back and forth with the idea of getting into the AK74s because it is so cheap right now. The last order I got from Sam was this week and I almost bought some cases of the 74 ammo just to have it but decided to wait until next order. I guess I have it bad, buying ammo for guns I don't even have yet. Gotta love this stuff!

LOL, I hear ya. I'm buying 50BMG for a gun I don't have yet. At least I have most of the parts. OTOH, 50 cal is a bit more spendy than 5.45. Say, I'll let my ignorance show, what is a Weldon?

Weldon is the place where I live and well....hunt. I'm not much for coming up with catchy usernames and it was the first thing that came to mind.
