Curious Sight out of Can of Reloaded 50's
I was over at a buddies house about a month ago helpin' him move a new safe and he looked down curiously at a can of 50bmgs that were reloaded about a month earlier and it was bulging... Now upon releasing the pressure in the can a yellow dust came out...
I did not have a chance to inspect the ammo but has anyone ever run into this before... From what I know the rounds were reloaded with Surplus IMR 5010 and a combination of pulled and new projo's... Needless to say I will be 50yards away when he starts trippin' the trigger on the big dawg...
So Von and I have been talking about this and it's like he suggests not a good idea to shoot something like this if it occurs to your reloads...

come to think of it, i have bought 30cal cans that came with yellow dust already in them. Im not sure what that means, i just clean em out with water. Possibly the dust was already in there when he filled the can. But still, that kinda pressure building up inside is freaky to say the least.

Instability and stabilization
Nitrocellulose deteriorates with time, yielding acidic byproducts. Those byproducts catalyze the further deterioration, increasing its rate. The released heat, in case of bulk storage of the powder, or too large blocks of solid propellant, can cause self-ignition of the material. Single-base nitrocellulose propellants are most susceptible to degradation, double-base and triple-base propellants tend to deteriorate more slowly. To neutralize the decomposition products, which could otherwise cause corrosion of metals of the cartridges and gun barrels, calcium carbonate is added to some formulations.
To prevent buildup of the deterioration products, stabilizers are added. 2-nitrodiphenylamine is one of the most common stabilizers used. Others are 4-nitrodiphenylamine, N-nitrosodiphenylamine, N-methyl-p-nitroaniline, and diphenylamine. The stabilizers are added in the amount of 0.5-2% of the total amount of the formulation; higher amounts tend to degrade its ballistic properties. The amount of the stabilizer is depleted with time. Propellants in storage should be periodically tested on the remaining amount of stabilizer, as its depletion may lead to autoignition of the propellant.
wow, never even thought about that - especially when buying old ass ammo in cans

And your point is... Do you think I take anything you or Dutigaf say seriously at times 1919_4_ME you guys are always on the nyquil... :moon:
Mr. Kubota :hail: You are the man...
Well anyway Widners gave a credit on the guys powder back to him and said just dispose of it... Causually they said sprinkle it around the plants for fertilizer... hmm... Now the possiblity of flammability in an extremely dry area... I think naught... :nono:
Yes and Gunrunner if its yellow and bulging and you have the corroded cases I would probibly pull that stuff if you ever happened across another lot like that... Not worth a squib load or for that matter burnin' the joint down...

I'm just stupid this way, but anything less than perfect in ammo gets dumped. I really hate blowing up. It sucks.

Gotta keep all the fingers and toes... :coffee:
Is this one of those Mikey will eat it kinda things everyone won't shoot it but Duti will...
I gotta admit I get a rush everytime I shoot somethin' homebuilt and fun to ride the ragged assed edge from time to time... :headbang:

Well hell, Duti, I got 2 big cans of brass I find unworthy, and a bag of US .30 AP rounds with green hair around the primers..I was gonna pull the bullets and load em in good brass, but if you promise us a good vid clip..just put a sheet of Lexan in front of the camera, those things are gettin expensive.
