What's the best way to refinish a German MG42 AA Tripod.

Blast and Park ?
Paint stripper and re-paint. ?

Let me know

Thanks

I would strip and repaint. Personally, I like the used/weathered look on mine.

yeah and just to add to that disassembling the AA 42 tripod those springs that help hold the legs are a pain in the ass to get back assembled in that thing after disassembly which is one reason why you don't see a lot of these getting the R&R done on...

i just sanded, cleaned and re-painted mine when i had it - looked pretty good but paint is not very hard wearing, it scratches pretty easily with a trip to a shoot in the truck bed :abused1:

i had thought about trying a different paint, something epoxy based like they use on trash dumpsters but never got around to it before i sold the pod. However if i had a park setup i probably would have gone that route as it would look better and match the gun.

Just a warning if you want to go the parkerizing route, i have heard getting the legs and locking system back together can be a pain in the ass - loboslanding was able to explain how to get it done but hes been MIA from the belt fed boards for a long time. Mind you this is second hand info as i never tried to take it apart myself.

Lobo got himself hitched a while back! New brides can be time consuming!!:big:
I imagine she's keeping him pretty busy.

Thanks for the info.

I was thinking about blasting it and having it powder painted.

I have done that with other things, it's pretty reasonably priced and hold up well.

Anyone know where the loboslanding instructions are posted.

Thanks
Gary

Powder coat should take care of most of the scratching problems

They really weren't instructions they were more like a warning to not take it apart...:big:

I'll do some searching around most of the information that Gunrunner was talking about was lost some time and we didn't have it here so... as they say no back up...

I would like to see pics of this MG42 AA tripod when done. In my head I'm picturing one of those unissued IO pods!

very true, alot of cool stuff can be done with powder coat :big: and definately more resistant to damage than paint or park - but i would see the problemo being getting access to an oven big enough to fit the pod legs :thinkin:
