Police bust tomato grow operation in Pullman apartment

PULLMAN, Wash. -- A Pullman landlord notified police about a grow lamp in a closet, and police got a search warrant for a drug raid.

Eight officers with guns drawn surprised three roommates in the apartment last weekend and discovered they were growing tomatoes.

Commander Chris Tennant says it's the department's duty to investigate all credible complaints regarding marijuana growing operations in Pullman.

I don't know about Washington State, but Florida law requires a landlord to set a time and date for entry and inspection of a rental if the tenant is in good standing (paid up). A landlord can actually be trespassing and charged with B&E if there is not an emergency requiring his unannounced entry to your residence, or an eviction underway.

Of course you need the time and money to wage such a fight.

I was doing props and special effects for a movie in 1984 while living in a rented duplex in Hollywood, Florida (see horror film "Scarecrows" one night on cable, it's my work)..anyway, I was preparing for the next night's shoot and had web gear for 5 commandos, 5 plastic replica Uzi SMG's, 2 semiauto dummy shotguns, a couple of plastic .45's, exact full size replica night vision goggles and scopes, and all sorts of radio gear and other military odds n ends. We went out for a Mc-D break, and after we returned there was a loud knock at the door. I answered it and was faced with the Hollywood PD SWAT commander and his entire unit in full battle dress plus many uniformed officers. I of course invited them in, which promptly confused the shit out of them.
Our landlady had waited until we left, entered the apartment, saw the dummy arsenal of movie props laid out in display, and you can connect the dots from there.
Many embarassed SWAT guys holding plastic Uzi's, making apologies that night.

Of course we got evicted. Public Nuisance.
