Well I have had this old Remington model 31 for decades (think it been with us for three generations now) but it just wasn't too handy with a 30 inch barrel and had been wanting to cut it down for years.

Well I bought one of the Chink trenchgun handguards with bayo lug, cut the barrel down to 18.5 and it really looks pretty good.

Hopefully I will get the chance to stick someone with it soon:green:

Nice job, Dan. I've been kicking around the idea of doing the same to my grandpa's old 12ga J. Stevens, like the old WWII trench version. What kind of bayonet is that? Damn thing looks like it's about as long as the shotgun...

The trench guns were designed to use the M1917 bayonet

They even made new ones in the 60's for use in Vietnam since they had long surplussed all the original bayonets.

I have a '97 trench gun that is missing the shield. It still works good. I use it for competition.

I would love to have an actual military model 97 but man the prices on those things

At Jays downtown, he has an unusual one, a savage auto that is ord marked, and he wants a grand for it!!

I know what you mean - I have always loved the look of them. Maybe one day I'll get lucky and find a good deal so I can add one to the collection.

The bitch is you can find a good 97 for 400 or 500 bucks but you put the ordnance escutcheon on it and it doubles and triples the price!!

Yeah, but there are no original ordnance escutcheon/heatshields to be found, and I REFUSE to put a CHINESE one on my Winnie. (It was removed at some time before I bought the gun)

Believe it or not GPC still had original heat shields five years ago and they were only 200 bucks. But like many other things, its a deal to never be seen again:dead:
