In case anyone interested there's a good article on the caseless ammunition the military is developing for the new generation SAW... as it stands according to the article they have reduced the weight by 44%... I also noticed the cartridges overall lenght is shorter so that will mean a higher rate of fire perhaps... Very interesting stuff so if your not a member or don't receive the national rifleman bug one of your buddy's copies and give it a quick read...:saluteflag:

Caseless ammo isn't a new idea. H&K did a lot of work with it a few years back, in (I believe?) the G36. It was a good idea, but appearantly the actual practice had some issues. Still, if a newer version worked the bugs out, it would be a step ahead for firearms. At least, until we finally get our plasma rifles ready to go!

Yep, I have an old American Rifleman from the 60's where they are outlining a test program for a caseless ammo M-14 (didn't work out then either).

You know, I wonder if the final solution to the problem of caseless ammo is going to wind up being that the bullet and the propellant need to be seperate rather than trying to combine them?

If you want caseless there is a system out there that worked good enough and was pretty dependable, it was the pinfire system. Guess why the world moved away from pinfire ammo to traditional cased ammo? Caseless is a little less reliable and its just a pain in the ass.

i saw a thing on tv about a support gun that used caseless ammo and was fired electrically. It basically had powder and a bullet stacked on top of each other and teh electric pulse would fire em one at a time.

I just dont know what the advantage to it besides rate of fire could be. I would think it would be sucseptible (spelling) to high humidity and shit like that. Call me old fashioned but having that brass case makes me feel better about my ammo's reliability factor. Think about it, many of us are shooting ammo that is almost 60 years old, that in itself is a proof that casings work and probably shouldnt be fucked with. But then again, im a fan of innovation as well, so..... ill have another beer and shut my mouth lol.
