RE: AR-15 options...

Okay out of all the years I swore up and down at that black rifle I have chosen to build one of my receivers sittin' in the safe...

Why because 30cal ammo is getting expensive to reload... I need a baby gun to play with... :gaga:

So where I would like input is on the barrels... What I'm looking at is a 20" model but alot has been said about barrels on these toys so whats your input... Stainless steel, Chromoly, Chrome lined, rate of twist... Theres obvious advantages to each what is going to be my best all around shooter with accuracy on a platform like that...

This is one hell of a can of worms... I know a lot of folks have input on this as all the articles I've read over the years just keep hashing things back and forth... I am no stranger to the AR but I just never felt the need to build or work on one for myself...

20" chrome lined heavy barrel, 1:9 twist for M855 / SS109 rounds or heavy match bullets that are long and need more stabilization or they tend to tumble at range...

...seriously....
as soon as you develop your platform and have invested thousands
of $$$ , the ammo will dry up.
get a 5 inch deck gun, set it up in your living room and buy beer.
Then look at it. save extra steps and worry.
My progression went from:
Oh look at the cute M96 swedish mauser (see where that got me)
OH yeah a FAL,.M1a,garand, SVT,fn49
SUHWEET, 1919....1919's...1919'sssss
DAAA..UMMMM, M2HB
Then that dam grazefire moved into the neighborhood. and I lost control.

wife's perspective.
oh, a gun..shrug (into the closet)
More guns, that'll keep him out of my hair while I clean house.(and an 8 gun cabinet)
A collectors license? Table at the gun show. Good he's socializing now.
A gun room and why does our three year old wear bandoleers?
Oh, look sweety. new neighbors, (that will distract him) :peep:
Yes, honey the deck gun can go right next to the ironing board.

Okay screw Arizona I'm movin' to Texas...:hail:

No... you know guys I got the garands and all sorts of toys but seriously never was interested in getting one... They never spoke to me like my garand or FAL... oh yeah and I got two of those old mausers too that I started out on.... Not worried about ammo drying out in that respect as I have buckets of 223 brass... Can anyone say clean up after a SAW249.... :headbang:

So Von do the 55grain bullets fair well in the 1 in 9 twist... From what I know from shooting another one I built for a friend it had a 1-9 twist chromoly barrel and when I shot it with 55 grainers I could get a 2 inch group standing with the irons... So I'm sure I could have pulled that group in a little tighter... I was running 4895 IMR too....

Sounds like the 1 in 9 chrome would be the safe bet...
