a buddy of mine is looking to get a m1a or socom16 and im curious of what the latest word on them is - we talking a good rifle or a pile of shit?
I remember hearing about a flash hider turning into a frog gig not long ago and some other stuff but cant seem to find it on TOS.
Any reviews, suggestions or warnings are appreciated.

Personally I think its a waste... I looked at the SoComs I don't think they are pieces of shit but a 16 barrel on one hell of an action that is very accurate is a waste... I've seen tons of these used people get them and either didn't like what they bought or wasn't there cup of tea... I think if you can find someone in your buddies area that will let him test drive there's that would be a plus... I like to try stuff... I tried it didn't like it and switched to the std barrel on a test...

Its a waste of money period. Its only good for cool points if you have friends that like that kind of thing.
To get it give any kind of accuracy at all there is like a thirty point checklist of modifications you have to do.
The regular M1A is okay but I would look for a nice polytech or norico one, cheaper and better quality.
However, however - if you have the coin to spare LRB is the way to go.
But the SOCOM thing is garbage. (Wonder if I can sue them over the name, I spent many years in SOCOM and we had all kinds of really cool stuff but never had anything like that "SOCOM" thingy).

My old shooting buddy had a Springfield M1A, the sights were not regulated to the barrel at all.He couldn't get it on a 3x3 foot paper target at 100 feet. The guy put a 500.00 scope on it with a really cheesy aluminum thumbscrew mount and of course the damn thing shifted all over the gun and chewed up the receiver. He never did get it squared away.Just another dust collector now.POS!

Gunner Dan is 100% right on this. If you gave me an M1A i would sell it cheap so when it F&&ked up i could buy som ammo or something. The last two i have owned were a total POS ,Sights fell apart ,gas piston out of round ,OP rod braking.
I could go on and on ,and i have many stories of the flash hider becomeing a frog gig ,and i have seen it twice.
The only thing good about the SA M1A is the day it leaves my house.
The socoms i hear are sometimes even worse ,and every gun store around here his at least 3 used ones for sale.
Dan steered me to LRB , and i have never looked back, it is my favorite rifle .
Fulton makes a nice one also ,but i hate there attitude ,and the LRB is hands down the best there is now days ,NO CHINA ,on this rifle.
The owner ,hand inspects everything , Smith Enteprizes told me he throws out more stuff than he keeps ,he will even take parts like the bolt home with him and lap it in perfict at all hours of the night.
It isnt money to this guy ,its a love for the rifle ,and he calls me all the time asking me if there is anything he can do for me.
He sent me a SP kit i didnt even order at no charge with a note saying (i dont know if you can use this ,but you can have it anyway.
When i ordered this rifle they told me 4 weeks ,10 days later it was in my safe.
1700 for a socom ,and i cought LRB in a good mood one day and i payed 1800 for a rifle with a chrome lined barrel ,so his prices are flexable ,and it is the only rifle that Smith Ent. brags on.
NO SOCOM , I looked at his Tanker rifle ,how could anyone buy a SOCOM ,over an LRB at the same price ,No Brainer.
To show you the Reputation SA is getting now , I have an M1 Garand ,custom 30/06 NM ,made by, Old Corps Weaponry, Obermeyer barrel ,Glass Beded stock ,the rifle is very tricked out.
It was one of 12 pounders guns he ordered ,and only shot one clip through it before he left us .
He had 3000 ,in this rifle , when i tryed to sell it on CB & GA ,people asked about it all excited and when i told them the Reciver was a SA ,they said no thanks.
I even told them i had papers showing this was a never issued 1953 reciver ,they didnt care ,and then asked me to part it out.
I had this on GB for 1200!!! nothing ,To you guys i would sell it for 800 ,or i would trade something also.
Why am i selling it ,I hardly knew that guy ,but Rhonda was good friends with his wife , and she wants to sell it because 12s widow gave it to her for helping out ,and she has a Garand and its sad to look at it.
12 Pounder also has a big collection of high end HO locomotives ,VERY NICE ,most still NIB ,i would sell real cheap ,all or one at a time ,no matter.

Okay if LRB is the way where would you suggest on picking up parts whose receiver should be used... Maybe we should start another thread on this I would much rather piece together a gun and either have someone build it or do it myself if SA is such a piece of crap...

D'Oah! I was thinking for a minute there that was an M1A... till I stopped and looked a little closer. Nice rifle, but I've got a Garand M1D project already in the works. Would like to have a nice M1A/M14, though...
Whatdya want to trade for the wife? :-) I've got a slightly used old American black and tan coonhound that I might consider swapping. He smells real bad, but he's loyal and housebroken- kinda like myself.

Phal, I don't know where you got the date on that M1 but its all USGI from November of 1940. Nice looking rifle, personally I wouldn't tell anybody it came from SA Inc, chances are its all USGI parts from the early days of their operations before they started using cast crap parts (GI parts are all drop forged).
You got any other pictures, i.e. drawing numbers from the bolt, trigger group, gas cylinder etc?
Kali, check out LRB ( http://www.lrbarms.com/index.html ), he offers rifles in all stages from complete, to bare receiver to barreled receiver ect. He also makes black rifle stuff too.

I wouldn't buy a SOCOM, but the M1A (as a rifle) is a decent piece. The main problem is getting one from Springfield is a "crap shoot". Some are total junk and others are outstanding. My SA M1A turned out to be a bit of both.. The rifle is good and functions well and is quite accurate. Unfortunately, the scope mount bolt-hole on my rifle is out-of-spec. The only way to fix it would be to send it back for a new receiver. Since the gun is otherwise good - I elected to use a Leatherwood scope mount that allows me to "work-around" the out-of-spec scope mount bolt hole.
Anyways, if I had it to do over I'd pay the extra for an LRB. I think the FAL is a far better rifle, but living in CA means having to have a "fixed" 10-round mag. I had a good supply of pre-ban magazines to fit the M1A, so that was my main reason for buying one.

Hay Dan ,Sorry i had the week end shift , I will get you the pics tonight.
Eveything on the rifle is mint ,it had been stored so long it had a little bit on Patina on the end of the muzzle, but that wiped off with an oil rag.
Rhonda wanted to put a Walnut stock on it ,but i didnt want to spend anything on it because i dont need the rifle.
I talked to 12 pounders buddys ,they said they went to matches ,and he wanted to go also so he had this built up.
They saw him shoot it to make sure it was good to go when he got it , and it did so well only one clip was needed.
On all the sites ,the guys who know the M1s all said i was way cheap ,but they had like 12 of them and the wife wouldnt let them get any more.
The pthers would hear SA ,and would run they didnt care anything about it.

Okay, well consider it sold
Come the first of the month we can work out the details and I will send you some bucks and my 03 license.
When I did the family photo last week I freaked, I could only find 11 Garands and I could swear I had twelve so I resorted to the paperwork and sure enough I only had 11 complete rifles. So the wife says "I guess that means you just need to buy more then"
God I love that woman:beer:

Rhonda unit ? WTF ? Hi honey ,working the night shift ?
Do you remember that friend of Lisas ,Shelly ?
You know ,that girl who liked other girls ? and had an entire collection of strap on love Guns ?
And how she told Lisa she thought you had a cute ass ? and if i ever needed any help with you she would be more than happy to come help me out the HARD way ?
Remember how you told some of the guys she was a real knock out ? untill you found out she liked Furr Burgers.
I bet Lisa would love to give me her number , and i am sure Shelly would loan me one of her UNITS , and together we could tag team.
And you have got to sleep sometime ,I bet those tie wraps would work very well with the head board on the bed.
Can we say squeel like a pig ?

Dan i didnt know if you needed any more photos.
Rhonda said it shot really good and she was abile to bounce a can at 60 yards but she didnt try it off a bench rest.
Hers is a Fulton Armory basic GI issue and she prefers 30/06 so she isnt a real M14 fan like i am.
But She has her ammo and i have mine and she gets mean if i get into her stuff.
I think she counts every round and polishes them ,chick thing.
