A new breed of gunner above

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a present day modern aerial gunner, Airman 1st Class Vanessa Dobos has little in common with gunners from World War I. Though Dobos does fire a massive machine gun from the deck of a … well … helicopter, perhaps her greatest distinction is the fact she’s a woman — the Air Force’s first female aerial gunner.

While her job as an enlisted aircrew member on the HH-60 helicopter may be different, Dobos is remarkably similar to her predecessors. She wants to fly.

Unexpected start

Raised in the small town of Valley View, Ohio, her interest in the military was sparked by her father. Described by Dobos as a “history buff,” her dad talked a lot about America’s past heroes while they often watched classic war movies.

“ He instilled in me so much respect for our country’s past heroes,” she said.

Near the end of her senior year in high school, she found herself talking to a recruiter. She told him she wouldn’t consider a job if it wasn’t flying-related.

“ I had no intention of joining,” she said. “I didn’t realize how few enlisted aircrew jobs there were.”

Nothing appealed to Dobos until another recruiter mentioned a career field that had just opened to new recruits — 1A7X1, or aerial gunner.

“ Just the title caught my eye,” she said, and to her parents’ surprise, as well as her own, she signed up that day.

Under pressure

A few months later, Dobos found herself in basic military training and later at the basic aerial gunner course at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. She was not aware she was on her way to becoming the Air Force’s first female gunner until midway through training.

“ I went from being another airman in the crowd to someone who people would always be watching and analyzing,” she said. “In some ways, I was afraid that people in the helicopter world were already prepared to be disappointed in me. I figured there were some people with hard feelings about a girl in the job. I was determined not to let them down.”

And she didn’t.

As a member of the 66th Rescue Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Dobos “mans” a .50-caliber machine gun aboard an HH-60 Pave Hawk. Her main role is caring for the guns and other defensive systems. However, she’s also responsible for briefing passengers and helping other crewmembers with the weapons, defensive systems, hoist and other equipment.

It’s the job her predecessors from World Wars I and II performed as they flew in their bombers through the flak-filled skies swarming with enemy fighters. It’s the job she’s prepared to perform in her helicopter during combat rescue missions while receiving enemy ground fire and dodging rocket-propelled grenades. But that’s not a reasonable comparison, according to Dobos.

“ I really love my job,” she said. “I enjoy learning about the history of my career field, but I don’t compare myself to gunners from [World Wars I and II]. Those men deserve a lot more credit than I do.”

Johnson 386th Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs. A crew of six Airmen at a forward deployed location climbed aboard a Lockheed C-130 Hercules together recently for the first time in their careers. But something distinguished this mission from others they had flown it was the first time an all-female C-130 crew flew a combat mission. they are all permanently assigned to the 43rd Airlift Wing at Pope Air Force Base, NC, and currently are deployed to the 737th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron flying cargo and troops in and out of Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa. While some would call their mission "historic," they feel this mission should be recognized like every other flight, a successful combat mission.

I'm fascinated by the rotorcraft tech a couple of posts up atop the big chopper looking at the main rotor pivot and holding the pivot pin in her hand. If there's not a hoist with a nylon strap holding that blade just out of the picture, you can imagine what she's saying right about then...

I'm also given a really creepy and weird feeling in my gut by the female soldier on guard by the drainage canal, probably Bagdad, with the M4 in her hands. I'm sorry, but I am a sexist chauvinist pig. The idea of our young women carrying weapons in full battle dress in combat makes me want to puke. It is a violation of the fundamental structure of the Universe to me. Sorry.
Even though I feel the Universe's natural state is chaos. There are a few rules. Men are Warriors. The idea that there is some 20-something puke sitting on his ass somewhere with a PS2 controller in his hand while that girl is deployed to potentially be killed is a horror and a disgrace.

Its not a thing of whether or not femals can do the job cause as a human being that they are they can. the question comes back to what other members quote and say " just cause you can doesnt mean you should" to me that is the whole point to protect your family and country. Women offer compassion etc when you were a kid and you fell your dad would tell you to get up suck it up and go on you mom on the other hand would pick you up take care of you the works.. just me .02

Well in my career I had the misfortune to integrate women into the last four squadrons I was in. The last one being in special ops; by far the most problems were caused by the guys not the gals, "ooohh vern, we cant have her do that, shes a woman", well fuck that if shes part of the crew, shes part of the crew period.

Once things settled in the women were every bit as competent as the men, and I only had one that took offense to me and my language, but I fixed her.

Of course sometimes they were a little bitchier than normal but that usually only lasted a week  Seriously, once the shock wore off they were just one of the guys and the missions moved along normally.

As for rough and tough, I will tell you that a man can be mean but theres nothing more vicious than a woman when she wants to be, rough stuff there.

How do I explian this? It is not that I think women can't do the job it is just that when I was growing up we had reverense and respect for women. In that day we had respect for the magic of women today the respect is only for the fact that they cando the job.
I have a nephew and a niece. My niece turn 18 on Dec. 23 she has a friend who is 15yrs & 8mos. The friends newborn is 4mos old. He 27yr old boy of a boyfriend has walked out on her. He was 25 when he started dating her at the age of 13. But she had started having sex at 12 before she meet him. Talking to my niece and nephew this seems to be the morm today. Things have changed since my youth because wemon are only respected for how they can be like men and men are so happy because women put out so easily today.
