John Plaster (SOG fame ) has completed another book regarding Snipers.

I am trying to get the skinny on how to get them tagged as I collect autograghed books. (I do not read all of them :) beating yu'all to the cheap shot "

Will post more info later.

Even if it “didn’t go here” – no one is gonna get shitty about it..

John Plaster seems to “know his stuff” as I have a sniper-stock that he designed and really like it. :headbang:

I’d say that if you’re looking to get your book signed – to “Google” him for appearances and find out when he’s going to be in your area. As far as “not reading” all your signed books – I think Mr. Plaster’s book is one that I’d opt to read cover-to-cover.

You should contact the author, and see if he has any bookplates available. Alot of them won't sign your copy if you send it to them, but they are more than happy to sign a bookplate and send it out to you. I know it's not the same as a signed copy, but it's pretty damn close.

I have met John Plaster and my best friend is a super good friend of his, we have a bet about .308 and 7.62x51 being the same round. The winner gets a steak ( I told him mine is rare )

I just have to clear it with John and am hoping if we buy the book from him directly he will tag it. I just don't want to get him committed to something.

One of these days I will photo my A6 stock that he signed for me.

If you read any of his SOG books, my friend is Mentioned in them.

John has put the word out if the book is ordered from his web site he will autograph it for you.
He is a super nice guy and definately a "Hero" in my book. So here goes his web site:

Slick,
I used to have one a long time ago, and while I was digging out my closet of stuff, I ran across a brand new "high" cheekpiece for it. Don't suppose you'd have a need for it?

I MUCH appreciate the offer, but I have both cheekpieces and am using the low one. But THANKS for thinking of me on this!

Hey on your .308 vs. 7.62x51 bet (not sure which side of this you're on), but I weigh in on the idea that they are NOT the same round. The 7.62x51 is loaded to lower pressures than commercial .308 and also tend to (in my experience) run a touch smaller from rim to shoulder presumably for more reliable function in battfield conditions.

Nope, their not. There are very small dimensional differences between the two cartridges.

The top cartidge in the drawing is 7.62 X 51 and the bottom is .308
You see there are differences between the two, the headspace gages are different as well:

308 Winchester (SAAMI) Gauges Shop (Military) Gauges
GO - 1.6300" GO - 1.6350"
NOGO - 1.6340" NOGO - 1.6405"
FIELD - 1.6380" FIELD - 1.6455"

Can you interchange the ammo? YES 99.9% of the time, vary rarely you may have a chamber that is just tight enough where it don't want to take the 7.62 in a .308 chamber.

As far as I know the loading data for pressure is the same between the two, the variances in the chamber are for the heat generated by full auto fire and or dirty ammo.

If anyone needs the exact case measurements between the two I can dig em up but may take just a bit.

Thanks for that info Dan! :headbang: I didn't have the "facts" and could only speak of what I've actually handled. Of course, military OR commercial brass (once fired) gets blown out and fire-formed to fit the chamber of the rifle that fired the cartridge.

My Savage 10 FP (tactical bolt-action) has a VERY minimal chamber and (full-length) resized brass just fits whereas new is a "snug drop-in". My dies are for .308 (commercial) so that makes perfect sense to me - but is important since my M1A headspaces at 1.631

Speaking of M1A's, Springfield "knockoff" Armory says (or use to say) to make sure the first 100 or 200 rounds used are in 7.62X51 and after that you could use either. I dont know if they still say that or not but thats the way they used to recommend.
